Where we see there is enough interest to create an actual course, we will advertise the course in The Villages media and will personally call you to let you know the course has been created. If you have an interest in a course that is not already offered at the college or listed on this survey page, feel free to contact us and we will add it to the list.
Course Title: The Art of Viewing Art Instructor: Joyce Hackbarth Class Length: 2 weeks Course Description: You’ve been to some of the great art museums in the world. You’ve been to your own hometown museum. You’ve never been to an art museum. Wherever you fit into the above 3 sentences, the question to ask and answer is, “How do I get the most out of my visit to any art museum?” You want more than a “My feet are sore; my back is tired; and it must be time for lunch” feeling! There is SO much more. This is NOT an art history class. This class offers practical, fun, easy ideas, and ways to truly enjoy your art museum experience. You are never too young or too old to have a marvelous museum adventure. Take a wife, husband, child, friend, or grandchild to an art museum and come out loving the art and the experience. It’s really easy.
Course Title: Astrology – A Human Resource Tool Instructor: Bob Tyo Course Description: Did you ever wonder why children born of the same parents can be so different? Or why your choice of friends is different from someone else’s? Or why some teams of individuals get things done and others just can’t get started or finished? Astrology holds some of the answers. Astrology is Astronomy brought down to earth. It has become a pseudo-science, which has made great strides with the advent of computers and software. In this class, it will not be used to predict or forecast, but rather as a human resource tool. We will study the effects of the plants on personality traits, attempt to objectively know ourselves better, and learn about complementing our strengths and weaknesses with other people. Our analysis will be applied to friendship, marriage, children, grandchildren, the work place, and a team approach.
Course Title: The Chronicles of Narnia Instructor: Joyce Hackbarth Course Description: Welcome to the magical land of Narnia-a place of wonder, magic, good, evil, and the prevailing presence of Aslan. C.S. Lewis is regarded as one of the greatest Christian authors who ever lived. Read his work, follow his thoughts and find the rich and rewarding Christian symbolism in his “children’s” literature. People of all ages appreciated his Chronicles of Narnia. It’s time to read it for the first time or re-read it for the 50th time. The magic and rich meaning is always there. We will look at The Magician and His Nephew (bk1) and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. (bk2) If there is time, we will look at other books in the series.
Course Title: Companion Dog Training Instructor: Melody Burton Class Length: 7 weeks Course Description: Teach basic behaviors to dogs and their owners for a better life together using positive methods.
Course Title: Comparative Painting Instructor: Deborah Moore Class Length: Course Description: History and techniques will be studied. The same subject matter will be created in acrylics and then oils. Techniques and styles will be compared as the artist creates two pictures. Landscapes and portraits are combined to create an outstanding works of art.

Course Title: Folk Art One-Stroke Instructor: Bob Salas Class Length: 3 days Course Description: Learn to paint using the FolkArt One Stroke painting technique that has captivated beginner painters – and intrigued experienced painters – around the world. This technique was developed by Donna Dewberry.
Course Title: Folk Mosaic Instructor: Deborah Moore Course Description: History and techniques will be covered. In this class, you will learn the secrets of how to create small and large folk mosaics. Easy step-by-step
Course Title: Hands on Instruction in Fiddle, Guitar, Mandolin, 6 String Banjo Instructor: Tommy Cordell Class Length: 4 – 8 weeks Course Description: These are non-lecture, hands on courses for any of the above instruments. The courses are for beginner up through advanced stages of development in any of the instruments. If you have never played one of the instruments or if you are at any level up through advanced, these courses are for you.

"Making Fitness a Lifestyle" is a course designed to promote health and fitness for people over 50 through a practical regimen of exercise. The following highlights of the course, covers the how, when, why and where of aerobics and strength training, combined with good nutrition practices: How to make walking a habit Strength training for women and men Circuit and Interval Training Nutrition The course is structured on the latest research and is taught by a qualified instructor with a degree in health education and physical education. If the course recommendations are followed and become a lifestyle, they will produce the following results: Stronger joints and muscles A stronger cardiovascular system Weight loss A higher level of total body fitness The instructor, Gary Palmer, teaches health and fitness to senior citizens at Cuyahoga Community College in the Cleveland, Ohio area.
Course Title: Images on Paper or Canvas With Color Instructor: Rosalind Fox Class Length: 6 weeks Course Description: Learn to translate images on to paper or canvas with color. Observe objects, people, and places. Learn to pay attention to things around you, and refine your own style.
Course Title: Improving Performing Skills Through Vocal Production and Stage Presence Instructor: Gayle Tice Class Length: 8 weeks Course Description: Hands-on teaching and critiquing will improve the voice and the stage presence of those individuals who are performing in local shows or wish to perform in the future. Not only stage presence will be addressed, but also song styling will be emphasized.
Course Title: Indian Art Instructor: Deborah Moore Course Description: History and techniques will be studied. Sand painting, dream catchers, pottery and weaving are a few of the projects covered in this class.
Course Title: Interior Decorating Course Description: Floor Plans/Furniture arranging, etc.
Course Title: Learn to Dowse Instructor: Karen Durham Course Description: Dowsing is usually thought of as a technique for finding water and an appropriate place to dig a well. It can, however, be used to find information by asking questions and dowsing for the answer. In this class, students will learn to use the pendulum to dowse for answers as well as being introduced to several other dowsing tools. Students may purchase a pendulum from the instructor.
Course Title: Learn How to Read Hebrew Instructor: Eli Cohen Class Length: 12 classes Course Description: You will start with learning the Hebrew alphabet and the vowels. Then you will learn how to read words and sentences. Hopefully, this will lead to simple conversation.
Course Title: Fun with Magic: Tricks with Cards Instructor: Joe Ponds Class Length: 3 hour workshop Course Description: This 3-hour workshop will provide the participant with a knowledge of many of the secrets used by professional card magicians. These card tricks will mystify family and friends while providing fun and amusement. The card tricks taught require no sleight of hand and are practically "self-working" so that almost anyone can perform them.
NOTE: Other workshops could be presented as a spin-off from this one, i.e. Fun with Magic: Tricks with Coins...Tricks with Rope...Tricks with Handkerchiefs, etc. Another set of workshops could continue with more advanced card tricks, i.e. Fun with Magic: MORE Tricks with Cards, etc.
Course Title: So You Want to Become a Magician?! Instructor: Joe Ponds Class Length: Course Description: This 16-hour training course is for those who want to become an amateur or professional magician. One of the greatest magicians ever, Harlan Tarbell, once said, "There is a big difference between a magician and a man who does tricks. One can give medicine to a friend but that does not make him a doctor." Generally speaking, the making of a magician is no different than the making of other professionals: it takes knowledge, training, and hard work in the development of skills.
Course Title: Miracles for the Earth: Transformation of Personal and Environmental Toxins Instructor: Bob Szacik Course Description: All around us we are seeing dramatic and often destructive “natural” events, from hurricanes and tsunami, to the effects of global warming. Are these events simply part of a “natural” cycle or are they indications of an imbalance between the earth and its human inhabitants? This course is based on the information in Sandra Ingerman’s book, Medicine for the Earth. In it you will learn how to transform personal and environmental pollution by transmuting negative beliefs, attitudes and energy which are generated by the emotions. You will learn to work in cooperation with the elements … earth, water, air and fire; with helping spirits and the spirits of the land as well as getting in touch with your internal divine nature in order to create healing and transmutation. Other key elements and spiritual practices will also be explored which can be easily incorporated into daily life. These methods are necessary and helpful for transforming and transmuting environmental and personal toxins.
Course Title: I have an Idea! How to Nurture Creativity in you and your grandchildren Instructor: Judy Fujawa Course Description: During this session we will encourage, ignite, and invite your creative spirit to become more active in your life. You, in turn, will want to nurture that same creativity in your grandchildren. Through snapshots, stories, and songs you will begin to discover the value and wonder of creativity. Judy will utilize the following lists from her book: how to Encourage Creativity, Supplies or Materials that Encourage Children to be Creative, Things that “Snuff Out” Creativity, and creative gift ideas for children in your life. There will be an opportunity to share your ideas and to compile your own list of creative possibilities. Judy’s book is titled: (Almost) Everything you need to know about early childhood education.
Course Title: Public Speaking “O, Yes You Can!” Instructor: Dr. Ronald Mansdoerfer Course Description: Students have an opportunity to learn a unique style of humor, encouragement, and personal motivation that will enable you to learn and apply methods and techniques proved successful in all 50 states and 23 foreign countries. In a completely relaxed, comfortable, friendly venue YOU will learn to prepare text and to speak with confidence and authority, while having tons of fun doing so. No more “Why Not’s” you can now and forever be a “How Can I’”.
Course Title: Rock n’ Roll and Latin Dance Instructor: Lee Gibson Class Length: 4 weeks Course Description: Do you like Rocky and the Rollers? Why not learn how to dance Rock n’ Roll? By taking this course, a student can expect to learn the beginning entry level of Rock n’ Roll and Latin Dances. Singles and couples are welcome to attend. Rock n’ Roll and Latin dance will enrich lives and give people pleasure in dancing. It is a variety of what many already know.
Course Title: The Secrets of Submitting a Manuscript to an Agent or Publisher Instructor: Joan West Class Length: 6 classes Course Description: This course will show writers the proper method of formatting work for submission to agents or publishers. I twill inform them of what not to do, as well as what to do. In addition to formatting, the course will cover such topics as: composing a writing biography; designing a market plan; self editing; difference between a submission for fiction and non-fiction; what to expect from an agent; what to watch out for before signing with an agent or hiring an editor. By the conclusion of the class, each student will have a properly formatted manuscript, a writer’s bio, and a marketing plan ready to submit to an agent or publisher and will have in hand a list of possible publishers and their individual requirements.
Course Title: The Shamanic Journey: A Contemporary Practice for Healing and Spiritual Guidance Instructor: Bob Szacik Course Description: The Shamanic journey is a practice of traveling to the spirit worlds beyond ordinary reality to obtain information in many areas of our lives: spirituality, health, work and relationships. Shamans in indigenous cultures throughout history have practiced the art of the Shamanic journeying. Through the sounds of drums, rattles and other percussive instruments, Shamans accessed information, guidance and healing for themselves and their communities. In this course you will learn about the Shaman’s role in their community; the ancient technique of journeying used by Shamans; how you can use the practice of the Shamanic journey to meet and work with your “power animals” and other helping spirits; and how they can be the source of information and assistance. Bring a drum or rattle, if you have them, a bandana to cover your eyes, a notebook and pen.
Course Title: Still Life Painting with Acrylic Paints Instructor: John Massey Course Description: Students will be assisted in creating an original painting on stretched canvas or canvas board using their own still life materials including real or artificial flowers. Students may work from photographs which they make themselves. Emphasis will be placed on the following elements in the course instruction: - Perspective, linear and atmospheric - Depiction of the inherent properties of glass, metal, cloth, etc. - Light and dark, shading (chiaroscuro) - Positive and negative space - Composition - Drawing with the brush - Underpainting, glazing and scumbling - Color Temperature (warm and cool ranges within local color) - How to stretch a canvas, how to prime a canvas Famous artists, especially the Impressionists, will be introduced at various points in the course material. Basically, the course will concentrate on a classical approach to painting, but creative approaches to painting will be encouraged, according to the student's level or ability. Duration of the couse will be no more one day each week for a ten-week period. Portraiture will not be included in this class. The ultimate goal is for each student to produce a finished still life by the end of the ten-week period.
Course Title: Swing Dance Instructor: Kip Sweeney Class Length: 4 weeks Course Description: This course will introduce you to various types of swing (Big Band, Roaring 20’s, East Coast, West Coast, Jitterbug, and Shag). Participants will be taught basic steps that will allow them to learn variations of the above. The class is designed for couples. Kip Sweeney has been an instructor in Central Florida for many years, including eight at Church Street Station. He has choreographed as well as taught swing and line dancing.
Course Title: Water Color Portrait Class Instructor: Jo Miller Class Length: 8 weeks Course Description: In this class, the student will paint from a photograph of high quality – head and shoulders only. You will do some basic tracing for likeness to paint. There are no free hand drawing skills required. The class will focus on skin texture, shadows and hair. Details will be mostly on the eyes, nose, and mouth for likeness. The goal is to do one portrait per class, but those who have more experience may get two or more done in class.
